Bridge vs Swap: What Is the Difference?

Bridging moves a token from one blockchain to another. Send ETH from Ethereum to Arbitrum and you receive ETH on Arbitrum — same token, different network.

The bridge locks or burns tokens on the source chain and releases equivalent tokens on the destination. You end up with the same asset on a new network where fees, speed or ecosystem access may be different.

Bridging does not change what token you hold. ETH stays ETH. USDC stays USDC. Only the network changes.

Swapping exchanges one token for another on the same blockchain. Trade ETH for USDC on Ethereum, or SOL for USDC on Solana. The network does not change — only the token.

DEX swaps happen through liquidity pools. A smart contract matches your token with someone else's at a market-determined rate. You receive the output token in the same wallet on the same chain.

Swapping is faster and cheaper than bridging because there is no cross-chain transfer involved.

A cross-chain swap combines bridging and swapping into a single transaction. Send ETH on Ethereum and receive USDC on Base — you are moving between chains and changing tokens simultaneously.
