Understanding Slippage in Crypto Swaps: What It Is and How to Minimize It

What Is Slippage?
Slippage is the difference between the price you expect when submitting a swap and the price you actually receive when the transaction is confirmed on-chain. It occurs because token prices change between the moment you submit and the moment your transaction is included in a block.
For example: if you swap 1 ETH for 3,200 USDC and the quote says "minimum received: 3,184 USDC" (0.5% slippage tolerance), but the actual execution gives you 3,192 USDC, your slippage was 0.25%. If it gives you 3,180 USDC, slippage was 0.625% — exceeding your tolerance.
What Causes Slippage?
Three main factors cause slippage: (1) Network congestion — if many transactions are pending, your swap may execute at a different price by the time it is included. (2) Price impact — large swaps move the price in the liquidity pool. Swapping 100 ETH in a pool with 1,000 ETH total liquidity will move the price significantly. (3) Market volatility — rapid price changes in the underlying assets during the confirmation window.
Stablecoin-to-stablecoin swaps (USDT ↔ USDC) have minimal slippage because both assets are pegged to $1. Cross-chain swaps may have slightly higher slippage because the route involves multiple steps (source swap + bridge + destination swap).
Slippage Tolerance Explained
Slippage tolerance is the maximum acceptable deviation from the quoted price. If the actual execution exceeds this tolerance, the swap reverts and your funds are returned (minus gas fees). Most interfaces default to 0.5% or 1% slippage tolerance.
Setting slippage too low causes failed swaps — especially during volatile periods or for illiquid pairs. Setting it too high means you may receive significantly less than expected. The optimal setting depends on the pair, liquidity depth, and market conditions.
How to Minimize Slippage
