Where Bridge Costs Come From

A cross-chain bridge involves at least three costs: source chain gas, bridge protocol fee and destination chain gas. Understanding each component is the first step to reducing the total.

Source chain gas is usually the biggest variable. Ethereum mainnet gas can be $5-50, while Arbitrum or Base gas is $0.01-0.50. The choice of source chain has the single largest impact on bridge cost.

Bridge protocol fees are typically 0.05-0.3% of the amount, or a flat $1-5. Destination chain gas is usually small on L2s but adds up on Ethereum mainnet.

Strategy 1: Start From an L2

The cheapest bridges do not start on Ethereum mainnet. If you already have assets on Arbitrum, Base, Polygon or Optimism, bridge from there instead.

L2-to-L2 bridges (Arbitrum to Base, for example) cost under $1 total because both source and destination gas are minimal. EVM-to-EVM bridge fees are also lower when the source is an L2.

If your assets are stuck on Ethereum, consider swapping to a stablecoin on Ethereum and then bridging the stablecoin — the bridge fee for stablecoins is often lower than for ETH.

Strategy 2: Use the Right Bridge

Different bridges have different fee structures. Stargate charges 0.06-0.10% for stablecoins. Across charges a flat relay fee. NEAR Intents charges 0.2% flat. Some native bridges charge nothing but are slower.

For small amounts, flat fees matter more than percentage fees. A $1 flat fee on a $50 bridge is 2%. A $1 fee on a $5,000 bridge is 0.02%. Scale matters.
