Cross-Chain Stablecoin Routes: How USDT and USDC Move Between Chains
USDT and USDC use different bridging mechanisms. Understand native vs wrapped stablecoins, Circle CCTP, and how to choose the cheapest cross-chain route.
Native vs Wrapped Stablecoins
When you bridge USDC from Ethereum to Arbitrum, you can receive either native USDC (issued directly by Circle on Arbitrum) or wrapped USDC (USDC.e — abridged version backed 1:1 by USDC locked on Ethereum). Native USDC is preferred because it has deeper liquidity and is directly supported by Circle.
USDT does not have an equivalent to Circle CCTP. Bridged USDT on most chains is wrapped (locked on source chain, minted on destination). This creates additional counterparty risk — you rely on the bridge operator to honor redemptions. Choose bridges carefully when moving USDT cross-chain.
Circle CCTP: Native USDC Bridging
Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) allows native USDC to move between supported chains without wrapping. CCTP burns USDC on the source chain and mints native USDC on the destination chain. Supported chains: Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, Sui, Noble.
CCTP is generally the cheapest and safest way to bridge USDC because it avoids wrapper contracts and their associated risks. AEXI automatically routes through CCTP when it is the optimal path for your USDC cross-chain swap.
Choosing the Right Bridge Route
For USDC: prefer CCTP-native routes when both source and destination chains are CCTP-supported. For chains not supported by CCTP (e.g., BNB Chain, Solana), use established bridge protocols (Stargate, Across, deBridge).
For USDT: bridge routes depend on the source and destination chains. Ethereum → TRON uses USDT's native TRC-20 issuance. Ethereum → Arbitrum/Optimism/Base typically uses wrapped USDT. Compare routes on AEXI to find the cheapest option.
Same-Chain Stablecoin Swaps
If you need to convert between USDT and USDC on the same chain, this is a simple DEX swap — no bridging required. Same-chain stablecoin swaps have minimal slippage (both are pegged to $1) and near-zero bridge risk.
AEXI's stablecoin exchange widget is optimized for this use case: it compares DEX and CEX routes for USDT ↔ USDC swaps across Ethereum, Tron, and other supported chains, finding the best rate with AML-checked CEX options when available.
